What are Fragrance scent families?
Once you have selected your preferred fragrance family, scroll down until you find the category you have chosen and select only one from that selection.
The floral scent family is one of the most common families. Used in many well-known perfumes, it usually takes on a feminine characteristic in fragrance.
Smells Like: Fresh Cut Flowers, Powdery
Subfamilies: Fruity, Floral, Soft Floral
Common Notes: Rose, Jasmine, Orange Blossom
The wood family includes scents that are warm and opulent, mixing incense like fragrances like sandalwood and patchouli with drier notes like cedar.
Smells Like: Warm, Opulent, Powdery
Subfamilies: Woods, Mossy Woods, Dry Woods.
Common Notes: Patchouli, Vetiver, Sandalwood.
The amber (previously known as "oriental") scent family includes herbs, spices, and dry powdery resin notes. Amber scents can be described as “sensual,” warm and “exotic.”
Smells Like: Herbal, Spicy, or Dry Resin Notes
Subfamilies: Soft Amber, Amber, Woody Amber
Common Notes: Vanilla, Myrrh, Anise
The fresh perfume family is a broad category with several sub-families, including Citrus (bright, zesty scents like lemon and bergamot), Green (herbaceous scents like grass, leaves, and herbs), Aquatic or Marine (crisp, watery scents like the ocean), and Aromatic (herbal notes like lavender and rosemary).
Citrus perfume falls under the broader fresh fragrance family and is categorized mainly by its dominant scents of lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, bergamot, and other hesperidic fruits. Sub-categories exist, such as Citrus Aromatic, which blends citrus with herbs and spices, and Citrus Gourmand, which combines them with sweet notes like vanilla or caramel.
Chypre is a perfume category defined by a scent structure that typically features a citrus top, a floral heart, and a base of oakmoss, labdanum, and patchouli. This scent family, named after the French word for Cyprus, is known for its complex and sophisticated, often earthy and woody character, and can be subcategorized into styles like green, fruity, and floral chypre.
Gourmand perfumes are categorized by their edible notes, such as sweet gourmands (vanilla, caramel, chocolate) and savory/spicy gourmands (coffee, cinnamon, spices). They can also be sub-categorized by how they blend with other fragrance families, like fruity, floral, woody, or amber, to create a more complex scent profile.
Fougère perfume categories are typically classified based on scent profiles, with common types including Aromatic (a classic barbershop style with herbaceous and woody notes), Citrus (with bright, zesty top notes), Floral (often incorporating geranium), and Woody (with earthy and green elements).
Leather perfumes can be categorized by their associated fragrance families, such as Vintage, Chypre, Woody, and Amber, which reflect their rich, warm, and complex characteristics. They are also categorized by their scent profile, ranging from smoky and animalic to soft and floral
Fruity perfumes are categorized by their core fruit notes, including citrus (lemon, grapefruit), berries (strawberry, raspberry), tropical fruits (mango, pineapple), and stone fruits (peach, plum). Other categories include watery fruits (melon) and uncommon fruits like fig, which add unique nuances.
Musk is a complex scent that is warm, soft, and powdery, often described as earthy, woody, or even slightly animalistic. It can also have floral or sweet undertones
Powdery perfumes have an effect created by notes like iris/orris, violet, vanilla, opponox and musk. These notes combine to create a soft, dry, and comforting scent reminiscent of talcum powder or vintage makeup
Now choose up to 10 base notes from the categories below:
A base note is the final layer of a perfume that lingers the longest, providing its foundation and lasting impression. Often called "soul notes," these deep, rich scents, typically woody, balsamic, or musky, emerge after the top and middle notes have evaporated, giving the fragrance its depth and character. Base notes act as the anchor, helping the scent to last for hours or even days.
Now choose up to 10 heart notes from the categories below.
Heart notes, or middle notes, are the scents that form the main body of a perfume and emerge after the initial top notes fade. They typically last for a couple of hours and provide the "heart" or core character of the fragrance, often consisting of floral, spicy, or fruity ingredients.
Now choose up to 10 top note from the categories below:
Top notes, or head notes, in perfume are the initial, fresh scents you smell immediately after applying the fragrance. They are typically light and volatile, evaporating quickly within the first 15 to 30 minutes.
